Since 2002, Northwest Asian American Film Festival has showcased the talents of Asian American film and video artists through a variety of programs.

2002

  • NWAAT produces A-Fest: Through the Lens, a program of nine screenings over twelve days. Twenty-seven short and feature-length films from the Northwest and beyond are presented with several filmmakers in attendance.

2003

  • Northwest premiere of NAATA's PBS series SEARCHING FOR ASIAN AMERICA presented by Northwest Asian American Theatre. Special guests include Governor Gary Locke and series producer Don Young.
     
  • NWAAT produces Northwest Asian American Film Festival 2003. Thirty-six short and feature-length films are presented in a four-day program with special programs devoted to Northwest documentary and narrative filmmakers. The opening night feature is NAATA's SEARCHING FOR ASIAN AMERICA, and the closing night feature is Greg Pak's ROBOT STORIES. Numerous filmmakers and special guests are in attendance including cartoonist/actor Lela Lee (SEARCHING FOR ASIAN AMERICA) and producer Kim Ima (ROBOT STORIES).

2004

  • Northwest premiere of Spencer Nakasako's acclaimed documentary REFUGEE in honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, co-presented by NWAAT and NAATA. Special guests include filmmaker and REFUGEE subject Mike Siv and Khmer American rapper Prach Ly.
     
  • NWAAT sponsors a reception with the Science Fiction Museum in honor of writer/director Greg Pak for the Seattle opening of his feature film ROBOT STORIES.
     
  • NWAAT and the Unity of Vietnamese Americans Committee (UVAC) host the Northwest premiere of Lindsey Jang's and Robert C. Winn's documentary SAIGON, U.S.A. Special guests include director Robert C. Winn and film subject Nguyen Huy Vu.
     
  • NWAAT produces Northwest Asian American Film Festival 2004. The four-day festival includes seven feature films and thirty-two shorts. The opening night feature is Ramona Diaz's documentary IMELDA, and the closing night feature is Vancouver, BC filmmaker Ann Marie Fleming's autobiographical documentary THE MAGICAL LIFE OF LONG TACK SAM. Special programs include focuses on transracial adoption, food, and music; an archival presentation of an early Anna May Wong film; and a panel discussion on Asian American representation in film. Numerous filmmakers from the US and Canada are in attendance.

2005

  • Various events including a screening of locally produced works presented by NWAAT and Tasveer to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

2006

  • NWAAT produces Northwest Asian American Film Festival 2006. Featuring five documentary features and over fifty short films, NWAAFF 2006 marks another year of audience expansion. The opening night feature is the first-person documentary THE GRACE LEE PROJECT with filmmaker Grace Lee in attendance, and the closing night feature is SORCERESS OF THE NEW PIANO featuring a live performance by Margaret Leng Tan. The other documentary features include IN TIME OF WAR, GRASSROOTS RISING, and WHAT'S WRONG WITH FRANK CHIN? with subject Frank Chin and filmmaker Curtis Choy in attendance. Assorted shorts programs feature Northwest films, animation, documentaries, narratives, and a late-night "extreme" program. A mid-festival party featuring comedian Ali Wong and "Cineoke" adds to the festivities. Guests include numerous filmmakers and film festival programmers from the US and Canada.
