Arthur Yu (Kelvin Yu) has problems. His girlfriend, Megan (Jessica Skerritt), is leaving to study abroad in China for a year, leaving him to waste another college vacation working at his dad's (Gedde Watanabe) fortune cookie factory.

As he suffers through another summer at the factory, Arthur's fortunes become more and more depressing: You will die alone. Two words: colon cancer. It doesn't take him long to nearly ruin his father's business.

BACKGROUND
The Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival is dedicated to the advancement of understanding and cultural exchange among the peoples of Asia, the Pacific and North America through the medium of film. It draws an audience of 70,000 or more from around the state, the nation and throughout the world.
HIFF is unique in discovering features and documentaries from Asia made by Asians, films about the Pacific made by Pacific Islanders, and films made by Hawai'i filmmakers that present Hawaii in a culturally accurate way.
Our 25th ANNIVERSARY in 2005 was a remarkable event. The festival screened 270 films from 40 countries - from Afghanistan to Zambia - to an audience of 70,000 people. This includes nine international feature premieres, and 17 U.S. premieres.
HIFF honored Master Director ZHANG YIMOU with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and presented a special sneak preview of director Zhang's latest film, RIDING ALONE FOR THOUSAND OF MILES; Japanese actor SONNY CHIBA with HIFF's inaugural Maverick Award; and American actor SAMUEL L. JACKSON with an Achievement in Acting Award.
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, directed by Academy Award-winning Ang Lee, was HIFF's Centerpiece Presentation and the festival closed with Vincent Ward's RIVER QUEEN. Other notable and award-winning films presented at the festival were PARADISE NOW and the international premiere of WELCOME TO DONGMAKGOL. We hosted noted American film critic Roger Ebert and had the U.S. premiere of the Korean hit A BITTERSWEET LIFE, attended by the film's star, LEE Byung-hun. We were pleased to have six premiere screenings reviewed in VARIETY, and over 600 mentions in the international and national media. LVHIFF also hosted a concert showcasing Japanese stars THE YOSHIDA BROTHERS.
Here's a selection of quotes about HIFF

5/13: Open house at new Asian American arts center!

PRESS RELEASE
Contact: Kathy Hsieh

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Through May 13, 2006
ReAct Announces the Creation of a New Asian American Arts Center
Open House: Saturday, May 13, 2006 from 4 - 7pm
Seattle's only Multi-ethnic Philanthropic Theatre Company, ReAct, has great news to share - the launching of Prima Vera Arts Center. Located in the Seattle Center area at 112 5th Avenue North, 2nd Floor, the new center will be ReAct's primary rehearsal and meeting space.
ReAct has been prominently featured in the news this year as a result of a series of burglaries during three different productions at three different locations over the past three years. After hearing of ReAct's bad luck and upon seeing ReAct's most recent production of "To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday," Vera & Joey Ing decided it was time to help ReAct turn their luck around. The 2nd Floor of their property across the street from KOMO-TV's Fisher Plaza was available, so the Seattle couple decided to donate the space for ReAct to use.
They are thrilled at the opportunity to create a gathering place for a multi-ethnic company like ReAct, and want to see the space come alive with and being utilized by artists. They adored not only the recent production, but also ReAct's original adaptation of "The Joy Luck Club" a few years ago and are looking forward to ReAct's fall premiere of "Uncle Hideki and the Empty Nest" written by their close friend and local author Jean Davies Okimoto.
Vera Ing serves on the Liquor Control Board and has been involved with many civic organizations such as Seattle Center, Mt. Baker Community Club, International District Improvement Association, International Rotary, and North Seattle Community College Foundation. She has also served on the executive boards of United Way, Asian American Management Association and the University of Washington Women Resource Center. Joey Ing, retired, was the principal architect with Ing & Associates. ReAct will be sharing the space with SIS Productions and Pork Filled Players. All three performing arts companies focus on developing the writing, acting, production and producing skills of local Asian American and multi-cultural talent.
The three groups invite the community to celebrate the opening of the Prima Vera Arts Center, named after the space's benefactor, on Saturday, May 13 from 4 - 7pm. Meet the staff of all three Asian American performing companies, tour the space, and get information on upcoming shows for each group. The event is free and refreshments will be provided.
"It's appropriate that a new space that will serve the Asian American performing arts groups in the area should open during May, which is recognized as Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Month," states David Hsieh, Managing Artistic Director of ReAct.
The building is located between 5th Ave N. & Taylor Ave N. just off of Denny Ave N. on the East side of the Seattle Center, right next to Fat City Auto, across the street from KOMO-TV, and down the street from McDonald's. The monorail track runs right in front of the building. The front of the building is painted red and is a small, 2-story store front. The entrance is on the back-side of the building (painted purple with gray trim) on the 2nd floor (above the body building studio).
The Repertory Actors Theatre strives to produce quality theatrical entertainment using primarily multi-ethnic and non-traditional casting, by:
* Giving theatre artists of all backgrounds and skill-levels the opportunity to work together on mainstream projects that they might not normally have access to due to race, sex, age, or experience.
* Using our productions to help raise awareness, supplies and financial support for humanitarian and theatre-related charities and organizations.
* Developing in the general public, an increased appreciation for the dramatic and performing arts.
SIS Productions is a production company that strives to create, develop and produce quality works that involve Asian American women, their themes, and Asian American issues. SIS Productions encourages opportunities and support for Asian American women to be involved in all aspects of the production of artistic endeavors.
The Pork Filed Players is Seattle second oldest sketch comedy group. Since 1997, PFP has been the Northwest's premiere Asian American sketch comedy group, touring from Eugene, Oregon to Vancouver, BC, racking up appearances at the very first two Seattle Sketchfests, Bumbershoot 2004 and SketchOff@%#?!, the first international Asian sketch comedy competition. Over the years, the Players have employed an ever changing cast of characters in their never-ending battle for truth, pursuit of justice and finding out whatever the hell they mean by the American way of life in the 21st Century.

RECORD NUMBER OF ASIAN AMERICAN FEATURE FILMS WILL INCLUDE LA PREMIERES OF HAM TRAN’S “JOURNEY FROM THE FALL” AND ERIC BYLER’S “AMERICANese” TO BOOKEND EIGHT DAY FESTIVAL
LOS ANGELES – APRIL 13, 2006 The 22nd edition of VC FILMFEST - The Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival presented by Honda will feature a record number of feature films from Asian American filmmakers during its eight-day film fest beginning May 4 – May 11 in Los Angeles. Visual Communications (VC), the nation’s pioneering premiere Asian American media arts resource and education center will present over 140 films, shorts and videos with an unprecedented 16 feature films from 18 Asian American artists.
“This is truly an historic number of feature films from our own artists,” states VC executive director, Leslie Ito. “This year’s showcase of Asian American films underscores the fact that these filmmakers are not waiting for Hollywood to call and are doing it on their own. With Ang Lee being the first non-white director to win the Oscar for Best Director, we are hopeful that these emerging storytellers will also become future contenders. For VC, these artists and their stories illustrate the strength that our organization has in terms of developing, shaping and supporting their works.”
The opening, centerpiece and closing night films of this year’s festival are from three Asian American filmmakers whose careers got their start with short films showcased at previous VC FILMFESTs. This year, the Festival is proud to present the Los Angeles Premiere screenings of the Sundance hit film “JOURNEY FROM THE FALL” from local filmmaker Ham Tran as the Opening Night feature on Thursday, May 4, 2006 at the Directors Guild of America (DGA); the centerpiece screening of Sundance award winner “EVE & THE FIRE HORSE” from Julia Kwan on Saturday, May 6 at the DGA; and Eric Byler’s “AMERICANese” as the Closing Night film on Thursday, May 11, 2006 at the Aratani/Japan America Theatre in Little Tokyo.

5/4: Bone Marrow-thon at Asian Counseling and Referral Service
[Stop by ACRS today to join the National Marrow Donor Program Registry -- a short visit for a worthy cause.]
Asian Counseling and Referral Service Partners with MAVIN Foundation on Bone Marrow-thon, May 4th
Seattle, WA - All it takes is 15 minutes to help save a life. Register as part of the MAVIN Foundation's MatchMaker 8th National Bone Marrow-thon. Come and join the National Marrow Donor Program Registry on Thursday, May 4, 2006, between 12 PM and 5 PM at Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS) Community Room (720 8th Ave. S., Suite 200, in Seattle' International District.)
All it takes is 15 minutes to complete a health questionnaire and provide a small blood sample for tissue typing. Once listed in the registry your tissue type may come up as a potential match for a patient. You would be contacted for further testing and to get more information about the bone marrow donation processes.
This year, 30,000 people will be diagnosed with diseases that are treatable with a marrow or peripheral blood stem cell transplant. Patients are more likely to find a match with someone from their same racial or ethnic background. However, only 6.5 % of the 5.5 million registered volunteers in the registry are of Asian and Pacific Islander backgrounds. There is an urgent need to diversify and increase the pool of potential donors to provide equal access to life saving treatments! Donors of all ethnicities are needed and will be accepted at the Marrow-thon.
For more information about registering contact MAVIN at (206) 622-7101.
For more information about getting to ACRS, contact Jocelyn at (206) 695-7579.

This Week's Attractions: Mountain Patrol: Kekexili (Seattle Weekly)
Mountain Patrol: Kekexili
Showing at Varsity, Fri., May 5–Thurs., May 11. Not rated. 89 minutes.
By Brian Miller
Most artists tend to romanticize nature, not understanding that what is stark and forbiddingly beautiful is also likely to be fatal for just those same qualities. The clean, pure desert, the deep, blue sea, the high mountains, and arid plain—they look great in pictures, but woe to the man who finds himself there alone. Not so director Lu Chuan, who unfolds this blunt, clear-eyed crime tale in the high plateau region north of Tibet's Himalayan range. Kekexili is a nature preserve some three to four miles above sea level. The region's indigenous antelope are being slaughtered by poachers, guts tossed in the dust for vultures to eat, the pelts brought to market for sweaters worn in faraway Beijing. Based on true events during the '90s, Patrol relates how Tibetan-Chinese locals form a vigilante band to stop the poaching. They have no government support, no money, limited bullets and supplies. Jeeps break down in the wilderness, or sink into salty, thawing lake beds. You can die of thirst or cold, or be sucked into quicksand. Or the poachers might just shoot you in the head with an AK-47.
