4/27: Launch of report: "A Community of Contrasts"
[Another community event happening tomorrow.]
---------- Forwarded message ----------
On April 27, at ACRS, there will be a launch of a major national report entitled "A Community of Contrasts: Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States." This is a demographic study done by the Asian American Justice Center in D.C. (formerly the national Asian Pacific American Legal Consortium), with partners such as the Asian Pacific American Legal Center of Southern California. ACRS is a local partner for the national launch.
The report gives a more accurate view of our communities and through doing so can combat ignorance and damaging stereotypes about our population.
To quote Karen Narasaki and Stewart Kuo, we hope the report will help policy makers, government agencies, courts, corporations, foundations and community organizations to better understand and meet the needs of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Using the information, we can work better to develop better answers to the problems our community faces in our efforts to be a greater part of our nation's social, economic and political life.
Registration will start at 9:30 am, program 10 am - noon, light lunch at noon. The program is free to the public but does require RSVPs to Ming Tanaka, at 206-695-7582. The launch will be held at Asian Counseling & Referral Service (ACRS) on 8th & Dearborn (720 8th Ave. South), second floor.
You are all invited to come! Please take time to come!

KOREAN FILM COUNCIL LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE NEW FILMMAKERS DEVELOPMENT LAB IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE ACADEMY FOR CREATIVE MEDIA AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII
April 21, 2006 (Los Angeles) – In a major initiative to nurture and encourage emerging Korean American filmmakers to bring their stories to the screen, the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) announced today the launch of its inaugural KOFIC Filmmakers Development Lab.
Inspired by similar creative environments such as the Sundance Screenwriters Lab, the KOFIC Filmmakers Development Lab is seeking applicants from the United States and Canada with a view to realizing projects that can find audience appeal in both Korea and North America. The Lab will be held in Hawaii in early September, in partnership with the Academy for Creative Media at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. Following in October, the Lab fellows will be brought to the Pusan International Film Festival in Korea to meet with relevant film industry representatives and organizations whom could potentially produce their projects.
"Through this incubator type project, we would be able to promote a sharing and a merging of ideas between Korean and Korean American filmmakers," states Ms. An Cheong Sook, KOFIC's Chairperson. . "It is important to us that through this cross cultural experience, these filmmakers will be able to establish markets and audiences on both continents."
"We are excited about this tremendous educational and professional partnership with the Korean Film Council, film industry and young filmmakers," said Chris Lee, Director of the Academy for Creative Media at the University of Hawaii. "It accentuates the tremendous growth of the Academy and its now global outreach. We look forward to a long and prosperous association."
Selected participants will be paired with industry mentors from both Korea and the United States, in an intensive week-long retreat. The goal of the Filmmakers Development Lab is to enable participants to develop a high quality script that could be presented to financiers and production companies in both countries.
"These are exciting times for filmmakers and films from non-traditional sources," expresses KOFIC Filmmakers Development Lab director, Roger Garcia, a well-regarded international film consultant and producer. "(The Lab) not only looks to identify the talent but also to present real-world scenarios to participants in developing and presenting their projects. "
Information on the KOFIC Filmmakers Development Lab, and how to apply is available online at http://www.koreanfilm.or.kr and www.hawaii.edu/acm
The deadline for submissions is May 31, 2006.
"While this project is an ambitious one, we believe the talent is there," adds Garcia. "And through this incubator program, we hope to develop the next generation of great new filmmakers."
The Korean Film Council is based in Seoul, Korea with a satellite office in Los Angeles. Its mission is to raise the standard of Korean films, and to promote the Korean film industry at home and abroad. KOFIC provides and supports programs to develop creative filmmakers, improve the production of low-budget films, raise the profile of Korean cinema, and create a network between filmmakers in the Korean, overseas Korean and international communities.
The Academy for Creative Media at the University of Hawaii, founded just three years ago, emphasizes digital cinema, computer animation and videogame design, and critical studies. Its student films have been screened at major national and international festivals. It is developing a Center for Indigenous Filmmaking, which will embrace story-tellers from Hawaii, the Pacific and Asia.

Saturday: Crazy busy day!
Lots going on this weekend -- ReAct Theatre's poker night, the Langston Hughes African American Film Festival, a community briefing on immigration legislation, and a performance by Aono Jikken Ensemble (subjects of Doug Ing's JIKKEN, featured at NWAAFF 2006).
Read on for all the details...

The Langston Hughes African American Film Festival (LHAAFF) supports community building by providing opportunities for artists and audiences to connect using the medium of film as a catalyst for dialogue that leads to social change.
The LHAAFF creates year-round opportunities to enhance media literacy, self-reflection, and community discussion. This annual event provides films from independent Black filmmakers featuring panel discussions, screenplay readings, matinee screenings for middle and high school youth and in-depth chats with filmmakers, industry professionals and local community leaders.
[Of particular interest:Seoul to Soul (USA) 25 minutes. Korean American filmmaker Hak J. Chung explores his own identity by taking a close look at a very engaging family. The Yates' household consists of the father, a black Korean war veteran, his war bride and their three grown children. This love match has endured for thirty-five years because of the couple's intellectual and spiritual unity. When they first settled in America, they faced discrimination and misunderstanding.
We learn how their children felt growing up as mixed race kids in a home where both cultures were valued. However, it is a surprise to learn that this seemingly well-adjusted family cannot escape the pain of cultural miscommunication. The beloved eldest son is estranged from his parents because his blonde wife and his mother are at odds. His wife does not understand the nuances of her in-laws expectations. His mother is offended that his wife won't eat kimchi and addresses her by her first name.
Part of the program "Ethnic Identity: Adoption, marriage & more." Intelligent documentary films about adoption, interracial marriage, and the question “What does it mean to be Black”? April 28, 4pm, $7.]

AONO JIKKEN ENSEMBLE
PRESENTS LIVE MUSIC FOR SILENT FILMS AT CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL
The Aono Jikken Ensemble will give a free live music for silent films presentation and discussion at the Seattle Cherry Blossom and Japanese Cultural Festival on Saturday, April 22nd, at 3:30 p.m. in Seattle Center's Fischer Pavillion (west end of the former Flag Pavillion). The presentation will feature rare screenings, with live accompaniment, of two short early silent films by master Japanese directors Yasujiro Ozu (Tokyo Story, Late Autumn) and Mikio Naruse (When A Woman Ascends The Stairs, Floating Clouds) [see synopsis below]. The films, with new live scores, were previously given their Northwest premieres by AJE to sold-out audiences at the Northwest Film Forum and Broadway Performance Hall and are among AJE's most accessible work with the film's emphasis on slapstick comedy. AJE uses a unique assortment of traditional and invented instruments, sound toys, found objects, and vocals that blend traditional Japanese music with a wide range of influences ranging (in these scores) from klezmer, reggae, and Latin to avant-garde sound experimentation. AJE will give a short talk and musical demonstration before accompanying the film screenings. The Seattle Cherry Blossom and Japanese Cultural Festival, which runs free April 21-23 at Seattle Center, celebrates it's 30th anniversary by highlighting contemporary arts (from the 1950's on) in the Northwest as part of it's Lives and Legacies theme.
A Straight Forward Boy (Tokkan Kozo)
Yasujiro Ozu's 1929 comedy is a rediscovered 14 minute fragment from a lost film that was based on the O. Henry short story The Ransom of Red Chief. An innocent-looking boy is abducted by a kidnapper who takes him to work for his oyabun (underworld boss). The kidnappers soon realize they've bitten of more than they can chew when the kid turns out to be an incorrigible mischief maker. The hapless criminals become so frustrated they try to return the boy to no avail.
Flunky, Work Hard! (Koshiben Gambare)
Mikio Naruse's 30 minute comedy-drama from 1931, aka Little Man Do Your Best, employs grandstanding style in a slapstick satire of people at the end of their financial rope. A meek insurance salesman ducks and hides whenever conflict arises, and his wife and son grow tired of both his humility and their poverty. The antics eventually dissolve into tear-jerking tragedy as the salesman is driven to distraction in an effort to succeed but ends up learning the value of family over materialism.
Aono Jikken Ensemble (AJE), founded in 1997, explores new sights and sounds in experimental music and performance-based art. AJE is the only group in the country devoted to the creation and presentation of live original music/sound scores for classic Asian silent cinema. They have created scores for the 1926 Japanese avant-garde masterpiece A Page of Madness; the 1932 Chinese martial arts adventure Swordswoman of Huangjiang; Kaneto Shindo's 1960 cinematic poem The Naked Island; Mikio Naruse's 1933 melodrama Nightly Dreams; and several 1930's dramas and comedies by Yasujiro Ozu, including A Story of Floating Weeds, The Lady and The Beard, and An Inn in Tokyo. AJE's stage works include 2002's Komori-uta (Lullaby), depicting the journey of a Japanese "war bride" in post World War II America; and 2005's Kaiki Shoku (Eclipse), about executed, turn-of-the-last-century political prisoner Suga Kanno. AJE has presented their work at the Seattle International Film Festival, Northwest Film Forum, Vancouver International Jazz Festival, On the Boards, Seattle Asian Art Museum and Theatre Off Jackson. Upcoming AJE projects include new live scores, with benshi - the traditional form of silent film narration, for To Sleep So As To Dream, Kaizo Hayashi's tribute to Japanese silent cinema, and Taki no Shiraito: The Water Magician, an important, rarely seen early work by master director Kenji Mizoguchi (Ugetsu). The group is also working on the stage pieces Kiga (Hunger), about women surviving war during Japan's middle ages, and Kioku, an experimental reflection on human consciousness in the nuclear age. AJE is William Satake Blauvelt, Susie Kozawa, Michael Shannon, Naho Shioya, Esther Sugai, and Marcia Takamura. www.aonojikken.net

TV watch: Lane's wedding on "The Gilmore Girls" tonight
Full disclosure: I've never watched "Gilmore Girls," but I've heard good things about the show from people I wouldn't have expected to be watching a Clearasil network. In any case, Lane (Keiko Agena) is getting married, and as marriage is a big deal in the world of such shows as these, tonight's episode is therefore a big deal. Having met Keiko once in San Diego, I can say that she seems like a very nice person. And of course, she was the star in Cynthia Liu's RED THREAD which screened at our festival back in 2003 which practically makes her family.

From: "Joseph Yang"
Just a note to Asian American artists out there to support 'The Gilmore Girls' for their diversity. Tomorrow's episode (Tuesday, April 18th) will highlight the wedding of Lane and Zach. Lane is a prominent Asian American character in the series.
There are many Asian American roles in this episode and include actors such as Emily Kuroda, Greg J. Paik, Ralph Ahn, myself (Joseph Steven Yang as the Korean Minister) ... and many others.
Let's support the inclusion of Asian America in prime time TV.
Cheers,
Joe Y.

Please go and see this wonderful film...and bring all your friends along, too!!
Director/writer/co-producer Vilsoni Hereniko and co-producer Jeannette Paulson Hereniko will be present at all the screenings to answer questions and tell their great stories. Information about the screenings is below.

THE LAND HAS EYES is the story of Viki (introducing Sapeta Taito), a young South Pacific Islander who redeems her family's name by exposing the secrets of her island's most powerful and important people. Shamed by her village for being poor and the daughter of a wrongly convicted thief, Viki is inspired and haunted by the island's mythical "Warrior Woman" (Rena Owen, Once Were Warriors.) The lush tropical beauty of Rotuma, an island of Fiji, contrasts with the stifling conformity of her culture as Viki confronts notions of justice and her own personal freedom.

Sign a petition to support Satnam Singh
=================
Consider signing the Sikh Coalition petition described below.
=================
A gentleman named, Satnam Singh, is a federal prisoner in a minimum security
Ohio facility at the moment. He is being deported back to Singapore because
of false documents. On April 9 he will be transported to a Florida facility
prior to his deportation. The problem is that Florida law prohibits male
prisoners from keeping long hair or a beard. As an adherent to the Sikh
faith, this is a serious problem for Mr. Singh and a potentially large blow
to all Sikhs in America and their ability to practice their faith.
We are asking all organizations to co-sponsor a petition to Governor Jeb
Bush. The petition can be access at:
