Asian Counseling and Referral Service Partners with MAVIN Foundation on Bone Marrow-thon, May 4th

Seattle, WA - All it takes is 15 minutes to help save a life. Register as part of the MAVIN Foundation's MatchMaker 8th National Bone Marrow-thon. Come and join the National Marrow Donor Program Registry on Thursday, May 4, 2006, between 12 PM and 5 PM at Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS) Community Room (720 8th Ave. S., Suite 200, in Seattle' International District.)

All it takes is 15 minutes to complete a health questionnaire and provide a small blood sample for tissue typing. Once listed in the registry your tissue type may come up as a potential match for a patient. You would be contacted for further testing and to get more information about the bone marrow donation processes.

This year, 30,000 people will be diagnosed with diseases that are treatable with a marrow or peripheral blood stem cell transplant. Patients are more likely to find a match with someone from their same racial or ethnic background. However, only 6.5 % of the 5.5 million registered volunteers in the registry are of Asian and Pacific Islander backgrounds. There is an urgent need to diversify and increase the pool of potential donors to provide equal access to life saving treatments! Donors of all ethnicities are needed and will be accepted at the Marrow-thon.
