ROULETTE
April Concerts 2006
@ Location One
Keys to a Garden- A Festival of Work On, In and About the Piano
GEMS/RARITIES: Saturday, April 29, 2006, at 8.30 pm
MARGARET LENG TAN performs rare works by JOHN CAGE, PHILIP GLASS, ALVIN LUCIER, HANS OTTE and SOMEI SATOH.
For Margaret Leng Tan's first appearance at Roulette since 1997, she will perform six distinct and unusual works:
Chess Pieces: Cage's recently re-discovered 1944 "score-painting" ...if you missed the world premiere in February!
How Now (c. 1968): Glass' Minimalist classic not heard in New York since Ms. Tan first revived the work in the early 90's
Nothing is Real (Strawberry Fields Forever): Lucier's take on the Beatles scored for piano, teapot and miniature sound system. By popular demand!
Stundenbuch (Book of Hours): selections from Otte's four-volume set of piano miniatures in Ms. Tan's arrangement for piano, string piano, toy piano and alumiphone
Satoh's epic Litania and transcendental A Gate into the Stars complete the program.
This performance toasts Hans Otte and Alvin Lucier in this milestone year of their 80th and 75th birthdays respectively.
